Road-closure bid prompts protest

TOWN councillors are due to hand in a petition to try to stop a Patchway dual carriageway being closed to traffic – and want as many residents to join them as possible.

A new £6-million link road has been built between Cribbs Causeway and the A38 to replace Highwood Road, which is soon due to close to general traffic.

But town councillors and residents launched a campaign to try to stop the move – claiming closing the road will turn the streets into rat runs and leave Patchway isolated.

The group wants non-commercial traffic to be allowed to join buses and bicycles on Highwood Road. They have now collected more than 3,700 signatures on their petition entitled Keep Highwood Road Open, and plan to hand it to South Gloucestershire Council to trigger a debate at the authority's next meeting.

Town councillor Dave Tiley told the Post: "It is intended to present the petition to South Gloucestershire Council at its meeting at Kingswood Civic Centre on Wednesday at 7pm – this should then trigger a debate at the next meeting in July. We've arranged a small coach to take people to the meeting, it's only a 26-seater and will leave from outside the Patchway Town Council office at 6pm to arrive at the meeting for a 7pm start."

To book a coach place, call Dave Tiley on 07720 669840 or Chris Mills on 07975 890591. The £2 return is subsidised by Patchway Labour Branch.
