Lingering Ike impact: Third of Galveston?s fire hydrants still damaged

One-third of Galveston?s 2,398 fire hydrants still need repairs almost four years after Hurricane Ike slammed ashore on Sept. 13, 2008, The Daily News reports in a detailed story on its website. The Daily News obtained the most recent list compiled by the city of the locations of the 117 out-of-service hydrants and 683 that work but need maintenance. Crews intend to fix the problem over the next five years with $2.5 million from the city?s Capital Improvement Program, the newspaper reports.
