New App, Viggle, Pays You To Watch TV
New loyalty app -- Viggle, now rewards television audiences for watching their favorite shows says Head of Product, Mike Sommers in this video interview with Beet.TV The app, which is available on Android, Apple iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, works by allowing viewers to accumalate points each time they check into a show, which they can redeem for a variety of prizes, including iTunes gift cards and Kindle Fires. The more points banked, the bigger the gift. Partnering with networks and television companies, Viggle further incentivizes audiences to engage with linear content across mobile by giving away more points if the 'viewsers,' a termed coined by the app company, engage with content that directly links to the shows they are watching on TV, he says. The app increases the 'social TV' experience for viewers, Sommers adds.

Improved Video Playback Can Double Viewing Time, Conviva Says
An optimized video experience can double the amount of viewing time. That's the finding of online video ad technology firm Conviva, says the company's Darren Feher, president and CEO, during an interview with Beet.TV. Conviva's video optimization tools are used for about 2 billion streams each month for major media companies such as HBO, ESPN, ABC and more, and the company found that about 20% of video streams aren't otpmized to the best quality they can be. That could mean the user encounters buffering or stuttering, for instance, he tells us in this video interview."If you take the viewers who have an un-optimized experience, they watch half as long," Feher says. He adds that for every 1% of time that people spend with buffering that equates to a loss of four minutes in viewing. When video, and the ads in the video, are optimized for a high-quality playback, then viewers will often spend more time watching, giving a publisher more opportunities to sell ads. For more insight into exactly how much revenue a range of Web sites can potentially realize with optimized video, check out this video interview. Beet.TV interviewed Feher at the recent VideoNuze conference.

Bombshell: Ben Spies Announces He Will Be Leaving Yamaha At End Of 2012
Ben Spies will be leaving Yamaha at the end of this season. The American made the shock announcement via email to the US racing website Superbikeplanet.com earlier on Tuesday, stating that he would be leaving Yamaha "for a litany of reasons", though unwilling to list them until a more "appropriate" moment. Spies made no announcement on where he would be racing, saying only that he was discussing his situation with his sponsors.
Spies' announcement has shocked the MotoGP paddock, taking even seasoned US journalists who know the Texan well by surprise. Spies was believed to still be in the frame for the second factory Yamaha seat in MotoGP, despite suffering through a miserable second year in the factory team. A series of problems - a broken subframe at Qatar, setup problems at Jerez, as well as a string of costly errors on Spies' own part - have seen the Texan score poorly all season, despite often showing well during qualifying. It was believed that Yamaha was waiting for a good result from Spies before making a decision on his future, but such a decision would have had to be made either at Laguna Seca or Indianapolis, the next two MotoGP rounds.
